Rudy was off and running and, in the eyes of the world, was viewed as one of the greatest fencers that ever lived, and his coach, Will Parrish, was helplessly drawn along in the wake of his success. Everything at the S-Lab was soaring through the roof; he had found true love with Tani Baxter, and his fencing center dominated New York City and was poised to go nationally. Both men were aware of the twelve-year-old that lived in the back of their minds, in everyone’s mind. This voice repeated only one phrase in a mobius loop until it faded into the background. No, I am going to do it my way! Will and Rudy were not immune to these immutable certainties. The problem was in the price that would have to be extrapolated for following the insistent demand of this inner voice; neither man would be ready to shell out the cost as the world of payment closed in.
